Gastro Problems

Eating habits have made gastro problems common among children these days. Viral infection is the most typical reason for gastroenteritis but bacteria, parasites, and food-borne sickness can be the offending agent.

Gastroenteritis means 'a stomach bug' or 'stomach flu' - these are terms used to refer to a bowel infection that causes diarrhoea and infrequent vomiting and fever. Though everyone seems to be at risk, youngsters younger than 5 years are much more likely to get gastro.

The time between catching the infection and the start of symptoms depends on the cause of gastroenteritis. Your child may have some of the following symptoms such as diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting, tummy cramps, bloating or pain, fever

Most kids recover within a week. However, with serious infections the sickness may endure for many weeks. It is important to find medical advice if your kid's symptoms have lasted for over a week.

Pain in the upper abdomen or behind the chest are common issues. There are a few causes including gastro-oesophageal reflux, where acidic stomach contents go back up into the gullet causing irritation and soreness. Peptic ulcers in the stomach or simply beyond in the duodenum might also cause these symptoms.

Prevention: Most youngsters will get gastroenteritis at one point, irrespective of how high the standards of cleanliness at home. To help stop gastroenteritis inspire youngsters to always wash their hands with soap after going to the can and before handling food. Before traveling ensure you and your kid had any vaccination shots needed and use bottled water when necessary when abroad.
